Don’t let Zack Greinke losing his Angels debut yesterday fool you: going out and getting the best arm on the market was a holy bleep move by the Angels. There’s going all in and then there’s Arte Moreno. He had already tossed in the car keys and the deed to the house when he signed Albert Pujols and CJ Wilson in the offseason. And now, sensing that wasn’t enough, he’s taken a huge swing for Greinke too. Huge swing, because they just gave up 3 of their top ten prospects to get a guy who is only signed through the end of the season and hasn’t been a great postseason pitcher. But they had to do it. And it’s a great move. The AL West is the new AL East: an arms race of epic proportions: you’re either in. Or you’re out. And Moreno’s definitely in. The Angels can’t do what they did in December and not be playing in October. This trade is less about Greinke and more about Pujols. And the Pujols deal doesn’t work unless the Angels win rings. Not a ring. But rings. And now they’re positioned for it. Big ups Arte.
