Cincinnati Reds and Team USA member Brandon Phillips joined Jim Rome on his radio program Wednesday. As Team USA prepares for the World Baseball Classic opener Saturday against Italy, Miami Marlins young star Giancarlo Stanton has been the talk of camp and Phillips is among his admirers.
“Man, he’s a dream giant. That’s what I call him. He’s unhuman,” said Phillips.
The fun-loving Reds player isn’t sure why manager Joe Torre paired him up with Stanton in batting practice either and isn’t looking forward to playing him during the MLB season.
“The guy is super human, I mean I’ve never seen a guy with so much power,” Phillips said. “I just hope that he doesn’t hit any hard shots at me during the season man, that guys incredible.”
But for now he’s happy to be on the same club as Stanton wearing the red, white and blue. In fact, the social media savvy Phillips was so happy when he was asked to represent his country by Torre he wanted to know if he could immediately tweet the news out.
“[Torre] said ‘What is Tweeter? I don’t know what Tweeter is,’” Phillips laughed.
But after the 72-year-old skipper spoke with his daughter and learned what Twitter was, he gave Phillips permission to do his thing.
