Minnesota Vikings star Jared Allen said the organization took a big step in reaching the playoffs last season, but hopes his teammates aren’t satisfied with that and are putting in their off-season work with a larger goal in mind.
“Just making the playoffs isn’t enough,” Allen told Jim Rome on his radio program. “When we get there we got to make some noise and try to push for a Super Bowl.”
To make that push for a ring, the Vikings will need improved play from Christian Ponder, something which Allen has already seen from the third-year quarterback. But he wants to see more.
“I tell him all the time, you have to be the guy. Adrian (Peterson) can carry this team so far, our defense can carry this team so far,” said Allen, insisting that Ponder is the x-factor. “You know, you look at teams that historically win championships and they have consistent play from the quarterback position.”
The Vikings signed free agent Greg Jennings and added former University of Tennessee wideout Cordarrelle Patterson with the 29th overall pick. Allen thinks those moves provide Ponder with more targets and as a result, this becomes a very important season for Ponder’s future.
“I hope he makes leaps and bounds,” said Allen and added “He’s a great dude.”
