The Chiefs were a disaster last year. But they’ve brought in a new coach in Andy Reid, a new quarterback in Alex Smith, a lot of new talent, and they’re turning things around. Suddenly, there’s some optimism around Arrowhead.
Some crazy, crazy optimism. Like this take from new offensive coordinator Doug Pederson: “Ultimately, every team has to have a quarterback. I think we have the best in the league.” Let’s pump the brakes a little, Doug.
Best in the league? He wasn’t even the best on his own team last year. Don’t get me wrong. Smith is a good quarterback, great guy, never complains. In fact, I love Smith as much as the next guy. Unless the next guy is Doug Pederson. Because nobody loves Smith like Pederson loves Smith. Not even Smith himself.
But while Alex Smith isn’t Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. He’ll look like Joe Montana compared to the guys the Chiefs had there last season. He may not be the best in the league, but last year the Chiefs may have had the worst.
