And how about Billy Donovan sliding into another Final Four? Let’s call this his fifth.
And he got there against a coach who wears 5 rings. I’d wonder why Donovan didn’t climb up the ladder, cut the net down at Chesapeake Energy and wear it around his neck at the presser with his kids, but I already know. I’m not cracking the college jokes. Because love this dude or not, he’s already a stone cold pro coach.
You know how bad Popovich has made some coaches look? A lot of opposing coaches can get you beat. Pop gets guys fired. And he just got out-coached by a rookie.
This would be like a first year head coach rolling up Hood Belichick in the Divisional round. A team doesn’t lose by 30+ in Game 1 and then win 4 of the next 5 by accident.
The Spurs don’t have their worst offensive half in the playoffs in 7 years by coincidence. How the hell does a Pop offense with that many weapons have 31 points after 24 minutes? In Game 1 they had 73! There were no open 3s. There weren’t even open 2s. That Donovan D was everywhere. Ask LaMarcus Aldridge. Guy went from looking like he was going to average 40 for the series, to feeling like he wasn’t even in the series. Because OKC sick’ d him with Enes Kanter, Madman Steven Adams, moved him off his spots, took him out of his game, blew him out of the series.
Meanwhile Pop’s throwing bleep against the wall giving minutes to guys like Andre Miller and Big Boban Marjanovic with the season on the line. And it all just flat lined. That wasn’t just Pop losing another road close out game. That was a blow out game. That was a tap out game. They had nothing. One thing to not be able to contain KD and Russ. Another thing when your own offense can barely get a shot up.
Billy Donovan tuned Florida into a Basketball school, and then showed up to his first NBA playoffs and turned Pop inside out. Props to Donovan, and mad love to the fam on Mockingbird.
