It’s been nearly 48 hours and I’m still not sure what I saw Tuesday night when Golden State took on the Clippers. It still doesn’t seem real to see Kevin Durant in a Warriors jersey. Just like seeing Steph, Klay, Draymond, Andre, and KD running together doesn’t seem real. Or fair. And you can ask the Clips about that.
Maybe you were expecting a hangover from the Finals. Or more of the hiccups that showed up in the preseason opener against the Raptors. Or just general awkwardness from trying to fit the new pieces together. And if so, you’d be wrong.
71-33 at the end of the first half. And a 50-point lead in the third quarter. And a final score of 120-75. There was awkwardness all right – the awkwardness of watching one team with All-Stars and Olympians get run out of the building by another team of All-Stars and Olympians. Klay had 30, Kevin 21, Curry 14. They nearly outscored the Clippers by themselves.
Sure, it’s the preseason and it doesn’t matter. And a lot of it had to do with the Clippers missing a ton of shots, but at the same time, the Clippers were expected to be one of the contenders in the West and they got wrecked. Again, it’s preseason, it doesn’t matter. Or that’s what I’d keep telling myself if I was anyone in a Clippers jersey or who played in the Western Conference. Because that was just as scary as we thought. Actually, scarier. Because it’s only preseason and they’ve only been together for a short time.
And because Durant said it wasn’t really that great. He told the Mercury News: “There’s a lot I need to learn about the game of basketball. I’m not as smart as I thought I was about the game.”
Huh? That’s not some free agent who they brought in to fill out the roster. That’s an MVP and 4-time scoring champ saying that he needs to get smarter, which also means he needs to get better.
Again, preseason. None of it matters. And I’m not going to say we should just cancel the regular season. But to paraphrase Lo Neal, if Warriors start dropping 71 in a half in the first week of October, you can cancel Christmas. In fact, you know what, you can just cancel the whole regular season.
