The Green rallied from an early 10-point deficit to beat the Ravens 24-16, calling on the recently benched Ryan Fitzpatrick after Geno Smith went down with a knee injury in the 2nd quarter.
Just days after yanking Fitz in favor of Geno Freaking Smith, Todd Bowles needed the veteran QB to get his team out of the mess it was in, and Fitzpatrick — to his credit — delivered a nice performance: 9 of 14 passing, 120 yards and a touchdown pass to Matt Forte as the Jets rallied for their second win of the season.
A solid performance. A nice afternoon.
But after the game — Fitzpatrick delivered a MASTERPIECE. Because he took to the podium postgame and went all-in:
“The biggest thing in this game in order to last is to have belief in yourself,” Fitzpatrick told reporters. “Because when the owner stops believing in you and the GM stops believing in you and the coaches stop believing in you, sometimes all you have is yourself. That’s kind of something I’ve dealt with before and something I’m dealing with now. I do my best ”
Owner. GM. Coaches. That’s strong, Fitz. But you forgot the fans and the media: they no longer believe in you either.
Of course, they stopped believing in you. That’s presuming any of them ever believed in you in the first place. You’re 1-5 when they benched you. You led the league in interceptions when they benched you. You had a six pick game when they benched you. Not a pick six, but a six pick, when they benched you. And you think they somehow did you wrong.
And after coming back on a Ravens team that is playing as badly as anyone in the NFL right now, you think that’s the time to ask everyone, you like that! Your acting like you’re sixth round choice Tom Brady, who just won the Super Bowl. I get that the Ravens might be your Super Bowl, Fitz, but get really. There is anyone anywhere not named you, who didn’t think you should have been benched playing as badly as you were. Congratulations! You threw a perfect screen pass to Matt Forte for your lone t.d. Of the day. Way to go Joe Namath.
You’re not the reason the Jets won. The defense is. And Matt Forte. And mostly Joe Flacco, who made some of the most hideous decisions of his career.
I know I didn’t go to Harvard — like Fitzpatrick did — but bro, are you freaking kidding me?
They stopped believing in you? They gave you 12 million dollars to play this year and watched you go on the field and essentially put a match to that pile of cash. They watched you throw pick after pick after pick after pick after pick — 11! — Before finally — finally — going to Geno Smith.
Then Smith goes down with a knee injury, gives you one more chance to get the job done, and you get this thing back on the rails… Only to go Kenny Powers on the joint and call the entire organization out for not believing in you.
Pro move. I’m sure Todd Bowles is thrilled.
Didn’t think it was possible, but the Jets may be a bigger train wreck coming off a win than a loss.
