Six-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson was a guest on The Jim Rome Show Wednesday. Johnson is one title away from making history by tying Richard Petty and Dale Earnheardt
As the Chase for the Cup continues, Johnson is having a hard time ignoring what’s on the line.
“I can’t really hide from it much anymore. It’s there, it’s in front of me, it’s the closest I’ve ever been to it. Thankfully, I’ve never been a guy motivated by chasing stats.”
And even those getting his seventh championship would be historic, it’s still not his ultimate goal.
“For me it’s really about the championship. Sure there’s a fair amount that’s about seven and tying the greats. But deep down inside I just want to be the best. I just want to do the best I can this year and I really feel like we can be champions.”
After getting into it with Denny Hamlin on the track in Miami, the two of drivers exchanged tweets regarding each other’s Halloween costumes. Hamlin had said after Sunday’s race that Johnson, “thinks he’s a king but he drives like a b****.” Johnson dressed up as a King a day later for Halloween, but says it was just a coincidence.
“My daughters wanted me to be a prince for Halloween and then my youngest, that’s three, said that I needed a crown. And I’m, “Sweet! But the king wears a crown not a prince.” She insisted that I put that on. Denny being the jokester that he is saw it. We actually had a chance to talk earlier in the day and clear the air on everything. He took the first shot with a tweet which was hilarious and then I found out that was dressed as a little puppy dog in a very interesting little stance so when I caught wind of that I went through the web and found a picture of it and re-gifted the favor to him. Just a little bit of fun in the end.”
