The Oakland Raiders did what they do: fall behind, get in some trouble and then come back and rip someone’s heart out: and they did it again last night in Mexico City.
Trailing 20-13 in the fourth quarter, they find a way to grind out another win. To go to sole possession of first place in the AFC West at 8-2, in arguably the NFL’s best division.
Then again, this is what they do. Six of their 8 wins have been by 7 points or less. And you know if it’s close late, Derek Carr is going to find a way to punch it in and beat you. Down 7 early in the fourth quarter, Carr pulls out some silver and black magic: 1 play. 75 yards. Tie ball game.
Then with the Texans on the move had looking to win it they come up short on two chances to gain two yards. When the much maligned Raider defense had to make a big stop, they made two. And got the hell off the field.
Texans fans will argue that they got jammed on the spot by the refs on fourth down. The Raiders and Raider nation will tell you, they don’t get a damn. And that it was inevitable because this is who the Raiders are now. A crew that never gives in, never gives up and comes back on everyone.
Don’t get me wrong. The Raiders didn’t play that well. They were a sieve at times, defensively. Again. They couldn’t run at all. Carr’s receivers were putting it on the ground all night long. And they just frankly, were not that sharp.
But that obviously, is the mark of a good team, when you can win when you’re not playing well. And the Raiders do. Jack Del Rio knows that wasn’t their best game. Far from it. But also knows his team went to Mexico City and were able to gut out a win against a 6-3 team.
Del Rio is a bad ass. Just win, baby. And they do. 8 times in 10 games. Scoreboard. Go ahead and look up at it, Texans fan. Because no one wants to hear about how the refs jammed you. Or how laser pointer guy is the reason you lost. He’s not. Bottom line, the Raiders are not a perfect team. And that defense still concerns me. But I’ve been riding with these guys since week one and I’m not jumping off now.
