If you’re Texas, and you have a shot at the best young coach in the game, you take it: sure, there’s risk involved. And no, he doesn’t have a ton of head coaching experience, but he has great pedigree, and worked a miracle in Houston.
And if he can do that there, what will he be able to do at Texas, given their resources and the fact that he’s wired as well as he is in the state? He’s a great recruiter… And a great motivator. And he’s walking into a very good situation; a much better one than Charlie Strong inherited… there’s no rebuild necessary here. He’s inheriting plenty of talent, so there’s no reason to think he won’t win right away.
LSU reportedly came hard for him; and I think he would have done great there as well.
This guy can coach and recruit anywhere… But he obviously thought Texas was the better fit as you know he had his choice of either job. Texas got the guy they had to get; great hire.
