I knew last night’s Jets-Colts tilt would be horrible. But I had no idea it would be that horrible.
Watching, I was thinking, this might be the longest game of the year. I know it’s the worst game of the year. And while I’m not looking to get anyone fired, you have to wonder if Jets head coach Todd Bowles is in series trouble right now. Not because both the New York Daily News and New York Post (called for it this am). But because you’d be hard-pressed to find a team that was more ill-prepared and disinterested than the Jets last night. I mean, did the Jets even know they had a game last night?
Sure, Bowles won 10 games last year, but that may as well been 10 years ago. Because he’s now 13-15 overall, and his guys looked like they had never even played football before.
Even Bowles had to admit, “For the first time this year, we got our ass handed to us.” And also said it was “very troubling.”
Well, he’s right about the second part.
I couldn’t give a damn about the Jets; I have nothing invested in them, and even I’m troubled by how they look right now. Because I’m looking at a team that has lost four straight that looks like it doesn’t give a damn themselves. They didn’t do anything right. And did everything wrong.
Multiple picks. Multiple personal foul penalties. Receivers putting it on the ground. Meltdowns on the offensive line. Breakdowns defensively. You name it. They looked like a team trying to get their coach fired.
I’m not saying it’s all Bowles’ fault, but a lot of it is. It’s his job to prepare them and get them ready to play and he obviously did neither. They’re a joke.
And good luck getting on Monday night again in this lifetime. They’ve been on twice this season and have been outscored 69-13.
The guy admitted it himself, “I don’t think we had a lot of effort. All of it falls on me. I’m the head coach.”
I’d love to say, easy, coach. Don’t be so hard on yourself. But he’s right. They didn’t have a lot of effort. In fact, they really didn’t have any at all and that does fall on him.
And they have an even more embarrassing team than themselves next: the 1-11 49ers; show up like they did last night and get cracked by the more embarrassing Niners, and Bowles really could be in some serious trouble. So this is Bowles’ personal Super Bowl. Because if he can’t beat the 1-11 49ers, he probably shouldn’t be their head coach.
Coach em up, Todd. Your job might be depending on it.
