Another tragic story as yet another former NFL player has taken his own life.
Heisman Trophy winner and first round draft pick, Rashaan Salaam was found dead in a park in Boulder Colorado. He was just 42. USA Today reports it is a suspected suicide as Boulder Police told Salaam’s family they found a note with him.
Brutally sad news. Way, way too young. It really does feel like it was just a few years ago that he’d gone from playing 8-man football at La Jolla Country Day to rushing for 2,000 yards in a season at Colorado and being lifted up on his teammates shoulders. And now he’s gone.
And in the wake of it, we’re left with sadness and questions… questions that center around CTE and whether that was a factor, as it was with Junior Seau, Dave Duerson, Andre Waters, and more.
And the truth is, at this point, we don’t know. But the fact that the question even comes up, and whether or not his death, is connected to the sport he played, is terrifying. And should give everyone pause.
There are any number of reasons and any number of demons that a person may be battling, so even if it later turns out that isn’t related to CTE, that doesn’t mean anyone should be feeling relieved. Because no matter the cause, it doesn’t make it any easier for his family who’ve lost someone they loved way too soon.
Rest In Peace, Rashaan Salaam.
