Babe Ruth. Joe Namath. Move over gents — Marcell Dareus has the floor. Because the Buffalo Bills defensive tackle is going out on the ledge of all ledges. He’s guaranteeing a victory over the Cleveland Browns.
“That’s just a guarantee,” Dareus told reporters on Wednesday. “We ain’t gonna be that team.”
Marcell — Slow down bro. I know we live in an era of preposterous statements. I know the world is flooded with hot takes. But if you go out and say something crazy like that — people might just hold you accountable.
In a rivalry like Cleveland-Buffalo, those aren’t just words. That could be a declaration of war. Just ask Cleveland Browns left tackle Joe Thomas.
“I hate that guy, I’m going to kill him!” Thomas laughing. “That’s great. The mindset we’re going to have is just the same way. We’re going to make them the team that we’re going to break the streak on.”
This game is starting to get me worried.
That kind of complacency is how streaks are broken, Joe. That kind of attitude turns 0-13 teams into 1-15 teams… Thomas sounds like a guy who didn’t just get out of practice, but just spent an hour cruising Amazon’s 12 days of deals. Or just got a google alert for that Bahamas vacay he’s already picturing himself on… Snap out of it, Joe. EYE ON THE PRIZE, JOE. Losing ain’t easy — Especially against the Bills.
But back to Dareus. Good for him. That’s the kind of leadership you want from the guy who signed a 95 million dollar deal with 60 of that guaranteed — and then chased it with a four-gamer for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. That’s the guy you want out front leading — someone with the guts to say they’ll do what literally every team has done for the past calendar year — what 27 of the last 28 teams — including preseason games — have done when they played the Browns.
I’m counting on you, Marcell. Don’t ruin this for all of us.
