Jets corner Darrelle Revis had himself a night. Revis Island or Riker’s Island?

Island? Sandbar is more like it after being charged with four felonies and a misdemeanor after he and a friend may have put a couple of dudes to sleep during a fight in the street in the middle of the night, recently.

And not just four felonies, which is bad enough, but two felony counts of aggravated assault, one felony count of robbery and another for conspiracy, plus a misdemeanor count of terroristic threat.

A terroristic threat?! Did dude go Hans Gruber on their asses? Did he threaten to bomb the embassy?. Who made that arrest, Jack Bauer?

Revis hasn’t said anything publicly, and I wasn’t there when it went down, so I have no way of knowing exactly what happened. But here’s what’s been reported. The incident occurred at 2:43 am Sunday in Pittsburgh’s popular south side. I’ll stop right there.

I don’t care how popular the south side is, it’s no popular enough to be there at near 3 o’clock in the morning. Nothing is. Just as nothing good ever happens at 2:43 am. Unless you consider terroristic threats, conspiracy, robbery and aggravated assault, good things.

So, reportedly, some random rolls up and asks Revis if he’s Revis. He confirms he is. Dude then reportedly goes full bag, breaking out his cell phone and begins rolling vid on him. Revis asks him to stop. The guy doesn’t. Revis reportedly grabs the dude’s phone and tries to delete the vid. That apparently didn’t work, so Revis tosses the phone into the street. A second guy comes to help his dude. Then one of Revis’ wingers jumps into it. Next you know, two dudes are sleeping in the street. Both were hospitalized and one of them suffered a serious facial injury, reportedly.

In other words, this dude went all TMZ with it, breaking out his camera, so Revis broke his face, or the other guy’s face. Or Revis’ winger broke one of their faces. Allegedly.

As if Revis didn’t have enough to worry about on the field, he now has a potentially huge problem off it. He was already lookin at the possibility of Jets cutting him, and this will  make it that much easier for them to do so. Because he’s nowhere near the player he used to be, and depending on how this plays out, the NFL could hit him with a suspension. And if convicted of these chargers, he could be looking at jail time.

Again, I wasn’t there. I don’t know exactly what happened. And importantly, being charged doesn’t mean he’s guilty. And it doesn’t mean he won’t be able to prove that he wasn’t the aggressor and that he acted in self-defense.

But with everything that’s at stake for this guy, he should have just kept walking. Easy for me to say, of course. Especially, when some bag who was probably looking to hook you, continued to roll video on you, even after he was asked to stop. But the key here is, he’s trying to hook you. And he did.

In terms of what he should have done? He should have extricated himself from a bad situation. Best way to do that, is to not put yourself in that situation in the first place. His attorney argues that he was just minding his own business, checking on some real estate he was developing. Right! Classic property development strategy. All the great developers check on their properties at 2:45 am. There’s a much better chance of not running into some d-bag who is looking to compromise you doing something stupid on tape at 2:45 in the morning, if you’re not out at 2:45 in the morning.

Again, he hasn’t said anything yet publicly. But it’s pretty easy to guess what he will say when he does: that he felt threatened, was in danger, and had no choice but to defend himself.

And he better hope authorities buy it, because if he gave those dudes the hands only because they were taping him without his permission, that’s not going to fly. No matter how baggy the dude doing it was.

Next time, just stay home. No one has ever been videoed against their will in their own home. And you’re no longer good enough a player to be putting dudes to sleep in the middle of the night, even if they did start it. Another reason not to be out in the middle of the night. Because most people who are, are looking to start something. Just don’t expect the Jets to cover you here, Sand Bar. Especially since you really can’t cover anyone anymore anyway.
