Accept A New Role, Island

Darrelle Revis is looking for a job. After out-running the law after multiple felony charges were dismissed against him last week — about the only thing he’s out run in the past year — the man formerly known as Revis Island wasn’t even outside the courthouse before he was politicking for a new employer.

Revis was talking a good game — a new diet and commitment to the gym taking 10 pounds off of him already. But after earning $39 MILLION in guarantees over two-plus years that has the Jets still paying Revis $6 million to NOT get torched for them in 2017, before ANY TEAM kicks the tires on Revis, he’s going to need to do more than throw around some clichés and look good in a suit after his buddy took the rap for putting two guys to sleep on the sidewalk.

That’s why I’m not buying the reports that have him linked to New England. Because while the Hood knows Revis and got a ring out of him, that was a different cat. THAT Revis was an elite cover corner. THIS Revis can’t cover. Or play corner. Hell, I’m not even sure he can play safety.

So that’s the question you have to ask. Who’s going to pay money to a corner who’s career is in free fall? Because in 2014, the last time the Hood brought Revis in, he was a Top 5 cover cornerback, per PFF. Last year? He was 77th — and only THREE guys in the league played more snaps and played worse in coverage than Revis.

So before the Hood makes a decision on Revis, Darrelle needs to make one on himself. Get in shape. Commit to the game. Accept a new role.

Because the days of Revis and Wide Receiver 1 on the outside are long gone. Because we saw the track marks down his back last season — when he came into camp FAT and got exposed from jump street — with Andy Dalton going a ridiculous 10 for 10 with a perfect passer rating in Week 1 on throws his way and then Marquise Goodwin torching him for 84-yards and 6 points the next week.

Until he proves otherwise, THAT’S who you’re hiring. So even if the Jets are picking up the first 6 million of the tab — you’re still rolling the dice. Because the Legend of Revis Island is dead. And the last guy to invest in legend is the Hood.
