Mark Few had heard all the raps: that Gonzaga was the best team never to get to the Final Four. That he and his teams stack wins against inferior opponents all year long only to flame out in the tourney when they finally run into someone who matters. He heard it all, and made it clear he had no need for any of it. Made it clear that he didn’t need a Final Four run to validate himself or the program. And he’s right.
That program has been to 19 straight tournaments, 18 in a row under Few. He’s a helluva coach. And that’s a helluva program, regardless of what conference they play in.
Again, this isn’t a fluke. And for that guy, it wasn’t a question of if, but a matter of when. And here they are. Here they freaking are. They didn’t back into anything. And it set ups a brilliant Final Four matchup.
And having survived what Few called a “war” against West Virginia, it should help them against South Carolina as Frank Martin is a Bob Huggins disciple. Beating West Virginia doesn’t guarantee they’ll be South Carolina. Far from it. But winning that rock fight, something else Few called it, will give them a pretty good idea of what they’re up against in playing South Carolina.
