So THAT’s the Wizards that I expected to see this series. After throwing away a couple big leads and two games in Boston, 8 technical and 3 ejections later — Washington made it clear that they AIN’T GOING OUT LIKE THAT.
Because the Wizards did more than just bounce back. They took the gloves off and busted up Boston — winning 116-89, going on a 22-0 run that made this one a NO-DOUBTER, and then nearly took the game into RIOT MODE after Kelly Olynyk threw a high screen at the Wiz’s Kelly Oubre and Oubre went back at him with NO REGARD.
That’s the Bullies of the Beltway that I expected to see this series. That’s the Death Row DC squad that I thought would come out in Boston, not the crew that let Isaiah Thomas clown them and the Celtics run them down from behind twice. And even if that Flagrant 2 might cost Oubre another game and a couple zeros in his checking account — that also might be the body check that opens up this series.
Because Boston responded to that beatdown in maybe the softest way possible. Waving the white flag. Getting hooked by guys like Brandon Jennings. Getting punked by John Wall at the free throw line.
And after playing NOTHING like the team that was one of the best in the NBA down the stretch, the Wiz got right and took out some frustration in that blowout win.
The Wiz woke up. Just in time to make this a series. Because they found a way to shut down I.T — Thomas only taking 8 SHOTS after scoring 53 the game before — and that beef in the regular season — it took three games to get there but that wick is lit, and now we’ve got a series.
