For months, signs have looked favorable for a possible Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor bout getting worked out. However, Yahoo MMA and Boxing writer Kevin Iole said Friday on The Jim Rome Show that progress has stalled and is now heading in the opposite direction.
“I think we might be further apart,” Iole said. “When I spoke to Dana White last night, I asked him about the negotiations, and he doesn’t even have a deal with McGregor yet. Talking to people on the Mayweather side, they’re kind of getting a little frustrated. There really has been no progress at all made.”
Iole said it’s not just a few items on each side that need to be ironed out either.
“It’s not like you know, hey they’ve agreed on 10 of 20 things that they have to agree on, I don’t think they’ve agreed on anything,” Iole said. “So conceptually, they know what they want to be a 12-round boxing match, but other than that, nothing done.”
Iole shared his thoughts on what would happen though if the MMA fighter was to get in the ring with the 40-year-old Mayweather.
“I think it would be the greatest promotion in history until the first bell rang, and then it would be horrendous,” Iole said. “You’re talking the greatest boxer of his generation, one of the best boxers of all-time against a guy who has never boxed.
“I mean why would anybody think McGregor would have a chance? I mean you can talk about how hard he hits and all these other things, look at the great boxers who hit hard that Mayweather has fought in his career and how many times did they hit him and they’ve boxed their entire lives. It would be a joke.”
