Vick’s Awful Kaepernick Take

There have been a lot of bad takes when it comes to Colin Kaepernick and why he doesn’t have a job. Just one terrible argument after another. Let’s run down the list, shall we? There’s the one that he’s a distraction. Chip Kelly said that he’s “zero distraction.”

There’s the one that he’s a bad teammate. His teammates voted him as winner of the Len Eshmont Award which is given to the player who symbolized Eshmont’s “inspirational and courageous play.”

Or that he needs to tell everyone why he wants to play football to somehow justify things. That makes a ton of sense. I didn’t see Blaine Gabbert having to justify why he still wants to play football. And then there’s the one that he’s just not that good. Maybe, but guys like Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick still have gigs, so that doesn’t wash.

But the latest Kaepernick argument is maybe the most ridiculous. His hair.

And that argument isn’t coming from some doofus on twitter, it came from Michael Vick.

He told FS1: “First thing we’ve got to get Colin to do is cut his hair. Listen, I’m not up here to try to be politically correct. Even if he puts cornrows in there. I don’t think he should represent himself in that way in terms of just the hairstyle. Just go clean-cut. You know, why not? You’re already dealing with a lot of controversy surrounding this issue. The most important thing that he needs to do is just try to be presentable.”

Look presentable? What does that even mean? He hasn’t been arrested. Not only has he not done that, instead he’s given $700,000 over the last nine months to non-profits and intends to give another three hundred thousand. That’s a million dollars to non-profits in a year and he needs to change his look in order to get a job? He could shave his head and that wouldn’t change anything. He could wear a rainbow wig and that wouldn’t change anything either.

He hasn’t committed a crime. He exercised his right to free speech and now he needs to change his look because of it? Ryan Fitzpatrick looks like he hasn’t seen a razor in years and you’re telling me that Kaepernick needs to change his look? And I know you clones can’t wait to point out the safety hazard that is Mike Glennon’s neck, but that didn’t stop the Bears from throwing big money at him.

Vick attempted to walk it back on twitter today saying, “Colin Kaepernick’ s hair has nothing to do with him not being on a NFL roster right now. Let’s be clear! I wish only the best for Colin. I stand by what I’ve said about him being signed at some point this season to help a NFL club. I think he is a great kid who has a bright future and I’m looking forward to seeing him on the field again. Trust and believe what I said was not in malice.”

I will trust and believe that. Just like I trust and believe that Kaepernick had a 4 to 1 td to interception ratio playing on a garbage football team last year and yet he still doesn’t have a gig.

And people have spent the last seven months coming up with one reason after another for why that’s the case. But let’s be real, we all know why he doesn’t have a gig. And if you don’t know it now and you’re still looking for other reasons, you’re just fooling yourself.  And it’s not because of his hair and that he can’t play.

Mike Vick did one of the worst things ever. And paid his debt. And rehabilitated himself. And is definitely a guy worth listening to. Except when he says if Kaepernick wants another gig, he needs to cut his air.
