Crazy Weekend

That was supposed to be a boring college football weekend. No matchup of ranked teams. No rivalry games other than the Red River. Just an average weekend in mid-October before things get cranked up. And then Friday night happened.

Boom. Down goes Clemson — the biggest win at Syracuse since Donovan McNabb was running the Carrier Dome. The Pirate took Washington State to Cal and got absolutely HAMMERED. And from there the chaos was just getting started. By Saturday night, Four teams in the Top 10 dropped. Two in the top 5 — Washington melting down in the desert as ASU’s defense shut down Jake Browning and the Huskies. Coach O pulled ANOTHER one off, ripping himself out of the coffin LSU fans put him in two weeks ago — taking down No. 10 Auburn in Death Valley with 13 points… IN THE FOURTH QUARTER.

And those were the upsets that HAPPENED. Miami needed another miracle to survive Georgia Tech. Tom Herman’s Longhorns nearly ran down Oklahoma. USC stopped Utah’s 2-pt try in the final minute to win 28-27. And Michigan needed overtime to beat Indiana. The only thing NOT surprising on the weekend was Alabama running a hole through another opponent, this time Arkansas.

Just when it looked like it was Alabama, Clemson and everybody else, this weekend happened. Just when it looked like Washington was starting to get some respect nationally, they lay an egg in Tempe. And just when you thought you could get a handle on what the postseason was going to look like — halfway into the regular season the only thing we know is that Nick Saban’s going to keep beating people… and keep sounding absolutely miserable while doing it.

I’d give you my take on what the College Football Playoff looks like today, but why bother. It’s just gonna blow up a half-dozen more times before Thanksgiving. It’s just gonna twist and turn, the Pac-12 looking dead today, but alive next week. Ohio State getting punked in September and crawling back into relevancy in November. And the SEC making another argument that they deserve 2 teams in the party — with Georgia playing better football than maybe anybody outside of Tuscaloosa and doing it with a freshman quarterback and a defense that’s downright terrifying.

That’s what one crazy Saturday can do. And I gotta be honest, I hope there are about 6 more in a row just like it.
