Gary Vaynerchuk joined the latest episode of The Jim Rome Podcast from Sweden, to discuss his many ventures in the business world. In addition to being a venture capitalist and early investor in companies like Twitter, Tumblr, Venmo and Uber, Vaynerchuk has also jumped into the shoe game, partnering with K-Swiss on the GaryVee 001 and 002s.
“President Barney (Waters) reached out to me and said I want to do an entrepreneurial shoe,” Vaynerchuk told Rome. “I was like, look if you are serious, this isn’t just me giving a shout out, if you are really in this for real, I’m super into it.”
The CEO and Founder of VaynerMedia, a digital marketing guru and four-time New York Times best-selling author, Vaynerchuk said the product felt like a perfect match for him.
“I’m very fascinated by the upside of doing something first,” Vaynerchuk said. “I also have a thesis of buying businesses that were once big and then I refurbished them and make them contemporary. So all the sudden I’m staring this business meeting right in the face.”
The co-host of Apple’s first original series, “Planet of the Apps,” feels like the initial brand awareness of the shoe, accompanied by new age thought and business practices, makes the risk well worth a potentially major financial reward down the road.
“One, I can rekindle K-Swiss, which I remembered as an ID hip-hop brand from 1986,” Vaynerchuk said. “And two, I could really contemporized it with Instagram and my styles. And three, if God forbid it worked, and the next 20 years, entrepreneurs have sneakers, it’s a lot of fun to be the god-damn Michael Jordan of that genre. Nobody else is going to be able to say they have the first meaningful entrepreneur sneaker. That’s me now. And that’s interesting to me now.”
